Quick answer
- Most Official Artist Channel (OAC) requests fail because the channel isn’t focused on one artist, has no public videos, or doesn’t match the artist on the official release.
- YouTube requires at least one official music release delivered by a distributor or label, and a channel that follows its Community Guidelines and copyright policies.
- Fix the problem first (name, videos, social links, strikes), then request again through your distributor.
- Interfine Music requests an OAC for any artist, on any distributor, for a one-time USD 15.
An Official Artist Channel brings your subscribers and videos from your Topic channel and your own channel into one place, and unlocks tools like Analytics for Artists. So it hurts when a request comes back rejected, or seems to disappear. The good news: most rejections come from a short list of fixable problems. Here are the seven we see most often from African artists, and what to do about each.
What YouTube requires for an OAC
According to YouTube Help, to get an OAC you must:
- own and operate a single artist’s or band’s channel that is focused on that artist’s music,
- have at least one official music release on YouTube, delivered by a music distributor or label, and
- keep the channel in line with YouTube’s Community Guidelines, Terms of Service and copyright policies.
The request must come through a label, distributor or music partner. YouTube also recommends having at least one public video, and says requests for channels without one “may be rejected or require additional verification”.
7 common reasons an OAC request is rejected
| Problem | How to fix it |
|---|---|
| 1. No public videos on your channel | Upload at least one official video, lyric video or visualizer of a released song. |
| 2. Channel mixes vlogs, other artists or reposts | Make the channel about one artist’s music only. Hide or remove unrelated uploads. |
| 3. Name doesn’t match the release | Use the exact same artist name on your releases, YouTube channel and socials. |
| 4. No Topic channel or official release yet | Release through a distributor that delivers to YouTube Music, then wait for the Topic channel to appear. |
| 5. Community Guidelines strike or copyright issues | Resolve strikes first. YouTube says an OAC is suspended after a Community Guidelines strike. |
| 6. No proof the channel is official | Add your Instagram, TikTok, X or website links to the channel, and link back to YouTube from them. |
| 7. Request sent to the wrong place | YouTube doesn’t take OAC requests from artists directly. Go through a distributor or label. |
Two Topic channels or a misspelled name
A very common issue in Africa: one song was released as “Mc Juma” and another as “MC Juma” or with a featured artist in the main name. YouTube may then create two Topic channels. Before you reapply, list every Topic channel that belongs to you and mention them in your request. For future releases, keep the artist name identical and put features in the “featured artist” field, not in the main artist name. Read more in what is a YouTube Topic channel?

Keep your OAC once you have it
YouTube says an OAC is suspended and goes back to a standard channel if it gets a Community Guidelines strike. Don’t upload other people’s music, avoid misleading thumbnails, and keep the channel focused on your own releases.
