Kampala’s music scene runs from Afrobeat and dancehall to Kadongo Kamu, gospel and hip hop, and more Ugandan fans now listen on their phones. To get your songs onto Spotify, Apple Music, Boomplay and YouTube Music, you need a distributor. This guide compares the main options for artists in Uganda in 2026 on price, payouts and extras like the YouTube Official Artist Channel.
What to look for in a distributor in Uganda
- Yearly cost in dollars. A shilling budget goes further when the plan is cheap and you can pay in small amounts.
- African stores. Boomplay is big in East Africa. Make sure it’s included, not just Spotify and Apple Music.
- How you get paid. Check which payout methods work from Uganda (bank, Payoneer, PayPal) and the minimum before you can withdraw.
- YouTube. Can the distributor get you an Official Artist Channel, and what does it cost?
- Support you can reach. When a release is stuck, can you talk to a person on WhatsApp?

Why Interfine Music suits Ugandan artists
Interfine Music is an Africa-first distributor based in Nairobi, next door in East Africa. It costs $12 a year, and you can start from $2 and pay the rest in instalments by card or M-Pesa. Your songs go to Spotify, Apple Music, Boomplay, TikTok, YouTube Music and 200+ platforms. Releases are reviewed within 72 hours to one week.
You can withdraw by bank transfer, Payoneer or PayPal once you reach $50. If your music already has a Topic channel on YouTube, Interfine can request your Official Artist Channel for a one-time USD 15, even if you use another distributor.
Royalties in Uganda: distribution vs UPRS
Your distributor collects money from streams and downloads. It doesn’t collect royalties when your song plays on radio, TV, at events or in bars and shops. In Uganda, that’s the job of the Uganda Performing Right Society (UPRS). Founded in 1985, UPRS is recognised by the Government of Uganda as a collecting society and is a member of CISAC, the global network of authors’ societies. It administers the performing right and licenses music users across the country.
UPRS membership is open to performers, songwriters, composers, authors and publishers. You can register online at membership.uprs.go.ug and then register your works, or visit the office at Plot 2240, Diplomat Zone, Kansanga Ggaba Road, Kampala. Uganda recently passed a new Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act, and URSB’s Commissioner for Intellectual Property said in July 2026 that UPRS is aligning its governance during the transition period. Check URSB and UPRS for the latest rules before you sign anything.
How to release your song from Uganda in 5 steps
- Finish your master, cover art and song credits.
- Create your Interfine account and pay $12 a year (or start from $2).
- Upload your audio, cover and credits (new to codes? read what is an ISRC?).
- Choose a release date at least 7 days ahead so you can pitch to Spotify playlists.
- After release, request your YouTube OAC, register the song with UPRS and promote on TikTok.
One thing to keep in mind: since 1 April 2024, a track needs at least 1,000 streams in the previous 12 months on Spotify to earn recorded royalties. Read our guide to the Spotify 1,000 streams rule.
