The 6 ways independent artists earn from streaming: master royalties, publishing, YouTube, Audiomack AMP, sync and fan support, explained for African artists.

Independent artists earn from streaming in two main ways: master royalties, paid to the owner of the recording through a distributor, and publishing royalties, paid to the songwriter through collecting societies and publishers. Most artists only collect the first. Adding publishing, YouTube income and sync can grow what the same streams earn.
When fans stream your song on Spotify, Boomplay, Apple Music or YouTube Music, the store pays the owner of the recording. As an independent artist, that’s you. Your distributor collects the money and pays it to you. How much you earn per stream varies by country, subscription type and platform, so focus on total streams and engaged fans rather than a single per-stream rate.
Each stream also reproduces the song (the composition), which earns a mechanical royalty for the songwriter and publisher. These are collected separately from master royalties, often through collecting societies or a publishing administrator.
When your song plays on radio, TV, in clubs or in public spaces, collecting societies such as MCSK (Kenya), SAMRO (South Africa) or GHAMRO (Ghana) collect performance royalties for songwriters. You must register your works to receive them. See our guide to publishing royalties in Africa.
YouTube pays in several ways: ad revenue on your official channel, Content ID claims on fan videos that use your music, and Shorts. An Official Artist Channel puts all your music and videos in one place.
Some platforms run their own programmes. Audiomack’s AMP, for example, pays qualifying artists from advertising revenue in selected countries, including Nigeria and Ghana.
Sync licensing means getting your music into films, TV, adverts and games, which pays a fee and royalties. Fans can also support you directly through merchandise, live shows and tipping features.
Stores pay master royalties to the distributor, which pays the artist. Songwriters earn separate mechanical and performance royalties through collecting societies or a publisher.
There’s no fixed rate. Payments depend on the listener’s country, whether they pay for a subscription, and the platform’s overall revenue, so earnings per stream vary.
Not necessarily. You can register directly with your collecting society, or use a publishing administrator such as Interfine to register and collect for you.
