How to Register Your Songs With MCSK in Kenya

If you write songs in Kenya, your music can earn royalties every time it’s played on radio, TV, in clubs, matatus and other public places. To collect that money you need to join a collecting society. For songwriters, composers and publishers, that’s the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK).

Quick answer

  • MCSK represents songwriters, composers and music publishers.
  • KAMP represents producers and owners of sound recordings. PRiSK represents performers.
  • You apply for membership with a form and the required documents, online or at an MCSK office.
  • Register every song you write, with all co-writers and their shares.

MCSK vs KAMP vs PRiSK

SocietyWho it representsWhat it collects for
MCSKSongwriters, composers, publishersUse of the song (lyrics and melody)
KAMPProducers and owners of sound recordingsPublic use of the recording
PRiSKPerformersPerformers’ rights in recordings
Many artists qualify for more than one society: you might write, perform and own your recordings.

These societies collect money from businesses that use music in public, such as broadcasters, hotels, bars and transport operators. That’s separate from the streaming royalties your distributor collects for your recordings.

How to join MCSK

  1. Get the membership application form from MCSK’s official website or any MCSK office.
  2. Prepare copies of the documents MCSK asks for. Check the current list with MCSK before you apply, as requirements and fees can change.
  3. Submit your application online or in person.
  4. Once accepted, keep your contact and payment details up to date.

Only use MCSK’s official channels to apply and pay. Be wary of anyone offering to “fast-track” your membership for a fee.

How to register your songs

Membership alone isn’t enough. MCSK needs to know which songs you wrote. For each song, provide:

  • The song title and any alternative titles.
  • All songwriters and composers, with each person’s percentage share.
  • The publisher, if you have one.
  • The performing artist and release details, including the ISRC from your distributor if available.

Make sure the details match your distribution metadata. Consistent titles and credits make it much easier to match plays to your songs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MCSK and KAMP?

MCSK represents songwriters, composers and publishers. KAMP represents producers and owners of sound recordings.

Do I need to join MCSK if I already use a distributor?

Your distributor collects streaming royalties for your recordings. MCSK collects separate royalties for the song when it’s used publicly, so songwriters should join both.

How do I apply to MCSK?

Fill in the membership application form and submit it with the required documents, online or at an MCSK office. Check MCSK’s official channels for current requirements and fees.
