How to Remove a YouTube Content ID Claim on Your Own Song

You upload your own music video and YouTube shows a copyright claim on it. It sounds alarming, but it’s common and usually easy to fix. This guide explains why it happens and what to do, without accidentally making things worse.

Quick answer

  • A Content ID claim is not a copyright strike. It usually just redirects ad money.
  • Claims on your own channel often come from your distributor’s Content ID service.
  • The fix is usually to ask your distributor to allowlist your channel and release the claim.
  • Only dispute if the claim is wrong. False disputes can lead to strikes.

Why your own song gets claimed

When your distributor offers YouTube Content ID, it registers your recordings so YouTube can find them in other people’s videos and collect money for you. The system scans every upload, including your own. If your channel isn’t on the allowed list, your own video can be claimed. The money usually still reaches you through the distributor, but the claim looks confusing.

Claims can also come from someone else: a producer who sold the same beat to several artists, a sample you didn’t clear, or a company that registered your song by mistake.

How to fix a claim on your own song

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Content, find the video and check the Restrictions column to see who made the claim.
  2. If the claim comes from your distributor, contact them with the video link and your channel link and ask them to release the claim and allowlist your channel.
  3. If the claim comes from a third party you don’t recognise, check whether your song uses a leased beat or a sample. Leased beats are a common cause.
  4. If you’re sure you own all the rights, you can dispute the claim in YouTube Studio and explain why.

Interfine artists can send the video link and channel link to our support team on WhatsApp (+254 791 393 533). We’ll check where the claim is coming from and help you clear it.

How to avoid claims in future

  • Only use beats you have an exclusive licence for, or read your licence terms carefully.
  • Clear every sample before release.
  • Get your YouTube Official Artist Channel so your music and videos live in one verified place.
  • Tell your distributor which channels are yours whenever you start a new one.

Frequently asked questions

Will a Content ID claim hurt my YouTube channel?

Usually not. A claim is different from a copyright strike. It mainly affects who earns ad revenue on that video.

Why did YouTube claim my own music video?

Content ID scans every upload. If your distributor registered your song and your channel isn’t allowlisted, your own upload can be matched and claimed.

Should I dispute a claim on my own song?

First check who made the claim. If it’s your distributor, ask them to release it and allowlist your channel. Only dispute claims you’re sure are wrong.
